Teaching Experience

2015 to Present

Instructor of Record: Color Design, Louisiana Tech University School of Design, Ruston La. This course introduces students to the essential elements of color and the implementation of color into basic design. Students develop an understanding of color perception, expression, and application in traditional imagery, using two-dimensional formats through a series of problem solving exercises and projects. Students establish and demonstrate skill in color mixing and color discernment, as well as become familiar with the history of human exploration of and use of color. The course is built upon discussions of color and its relationship to composition, through harmony and contrast.

Instructor of Record: 2-D Design, Louisiana Tech University School of Design. 2-D design is required for all studio art and graphic design majors, and functions as an introduction to basic design techniques and terminology. Students work to expand their visual vocabulary, increase their level of craftsmanship, and begin to think conceptually. Projects focus on effective use of the elements and principles of design, and are executed individually and in groups. This course covers the basics of Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop in addition to hand-crafting techniques. Creative problem solving and critical thinking are emphasized.

Teaching Assistant: Drawing II, Louisiana Tech University School of Design, Ruston La. Professor Kathy Vellard. In this course students apply drawing skills acquired in Drawing I, to more advanced problems. Linear perspective, compositional structure, figure/ground integration, spatial perception, critical thinking, and analytical skills are all emphasized extensively. In some sections of the course students will apply a more realistic approach in their work, and later begin to explore other conceptual approaches such as abstraction, allowing their acquired skills to express ideas in a more ambiguous way.

2014

Teaching Assistant: Drawing I, Louisiana Tech University School of Design, Ruston La. Professor Nicole Duet. This course introduces students to the expressive use of drawing materials such as graphite/pencil, and charcoal. Students learn the basics of line, contour, shading, texture, perspective, composition and action drawing. Techniques covered include gesture drawing; pencil measuring and angling techniques, and comparative measuring (“Giacometti” drawing). Students learn to sensitively handle the drawing media, focusing on accurate perception, expressive line quality, value and composition. In addition to drawing realistically from life, students are encouraged to convey ideas and emotions through their work. Students create several original works of art over the course of the quarter and compile a portfolio of their artwork.
